Unfortunately, many Americans no longer take an interest in their European heritage and 

the struggles of their immigrant ancestors. Over the last ten years, a number of Slovak institutions in the United States have closed their doors and distributed their holdings. They no longer provide an opportunity to share the living history and culture of Slovakia and its immigrant experience. Therefore, the importance of the Slovak Institute and Library of Cleveland is growing indeed. It has currently become the only research institution for Slovak literature and culture east of the Mississippi River.

    Located in the abbey under the direction of Milan Kobulsky, the Slovak Institute and Library, established in 1952 by Abbot Theodore Kojis, OSB and Fr. Andrew Pier, OSB, continues to maintain its cultural tradition welcoming scholars and visitors from all over the world to view its unique collection of books and periodicals in the Slovak language and English.
